Talk about riding in the Midwest, and arrange meet-ups.

Boyne Mountain Trip (photos)

Last week I went to Boyne Mountain, in Michigan. Getting there was, well, not half the fun, but at 11 hours, an experience.

There was some ice on the bumps, but otherwise the snow was good.

By Midwestern standards, it's a good place, but you can still see the main lodge (in this case, the new hotel) from the top, at least from some vantage points.

There's a base area with a shopping mall of two or three blocks. From there you can see to the top of the ridge of one part of the area. But there is terrain to the east and west that doesn't fit into the camera, and which you can't see from the base.

I stopped by one warming house. Typical condition? Here's what I saw on the window sill.

My favorite time there may have been at night. Unfortunately, only a third of the area (if that) is lit for night skiing and riding.

Semi-official stats:

Top: 1140 ft
Bottom: 640 ft
Vertical Drop: 500 ft
Longest Run: 1.00 mi
Skiable Area: 416 acres.

One mile is about the limit for the Midwest.
