Cheap Gear Websites

Postby bernwern » Mon Oct 27, 2008 11:16 am

OK, I met with John this weekend and we talked a good bit. He asked where I get my gear, partially due to not having higher-end freeriding gear available in MN for sale, but also due to prices. With that in mind, there are a plethora of websites to use ... just search it sometime. However, I have some good suggestions, assuming you can spend some time checking the internet every hour or so (which I do at work). These sites are essentially auction sites from Backcountry.com (also backcountryoutlet.com). They sell one item until gone, then put up a new one. Very easy to make purchases and reasonable shipping. Here's the links before I ramble on more:

http://www.steapandcheap.com (all kinds of outdoor gear)
http://www.whiskeymilitia.com (typically surf/skate/snowboard gear, sometimes clothing, watches, and sunglasses)
http://www.tramdock.com (their newest site, all skiing gear...but I got gloves just the other day for boarding)

There is also a biking one for those enjoying any type of cycling: http://www.chainlove.com

Some examples of gear I have gotten on the cheap:

SpecialBlend Fader Flage Gore-Tex jacket for $138 with shipping ($330 retail)
Bern Brentwood Helmet for $48 with shipping (retails for $110)
Burton and Dakine gloves usually for $25-$30 with shipping (retailing for $50+ a pair)

There is another site to coordinate with: http://www.gearattack.com This site tracks which deals have happened on the sites and when, plus last known quantities. It also lets you know how many times that item has been up for auction....usually they return every 6-12 days if you missed something you want. Also, some people get those items and find they don't like the fit or color, then offer them for sale through this site.

LASTLY: all gear has a 1 year warranty from backcountry.com. Send it back for any reason pretty much (you pay shipping) and they will get you a new one or similar item for free!

Steep and Cheap and Whiskey Militia are great sites. Got good deals at both of them, although it takes a lot of time and a lot of reloading until you happen upon something you want. No experience with the others, so I've got no input on them, good or bad.

Further good deals sites that have little to nothing to do with snowboarding: (Google each for the site)

Woot - Sells various things, a different item every day, usually gadgets at an incredible price and $5 flat rate shipping (yes, $5 even for a $749.99 42" LCD TV Sorry, expired deal)

Woot Sellout - Sells crap that nobody wants. I got a couple of 4GB thumb drives for dirt cheap

Woot Shirt - My favorite deal site. A new (and usually cool) shirt every day for $10, no shipping charge. Weekly user submitted T-shirt contests and weekday graphic artist designed Tee's. I've got probably about ten to fifteen of their shirts hanging in my closet. Don't worry, if you missed one that you really liked, you can buy previous days shirts for $15, no shipping charge. (Examples of shirts at http://shirt.woot.com/Blog/ViewEntry.aspx?Id=6349)

Woot Wine - Self-explanatory.... you drunkard.
- Old age and treachery always overcome youth and skill

Every single auction-style site combined into one giant listing the constantly refreshes. Enjoy.

Lenitech has a 60% sale on boots (and other stuff I guess). Limited sizes. Use coupon code BOOTS60 for the boots on sale to knock the price down some more.

Sale ends Saturday 9/26/2009.
