Having spent essentially all my riding days at various resorts in Lake Tahoe, CA, the temperature on the mountain has always been between 30F and 45F. I imagine it's far colder in the Rockies or the Alps. Does anyone have a rule of thumb on how many layers to wear for a given predicted high temperature?

On the coldest days, I wear:
- Thermals
- light or medium-weight turtleneck shirt
- thick fleece sweater cardigan
- thin fleece vest
- jacket

Above 20F to about 28F I wear thermals/turtleneck shirt, thin fleece sweater cardigan, and jacket. Above 28 I swap out the cardigan for a vest. Above 34 I ditch the vest and may open the pits on my jacket.
